Reel Geeks: Borderlands

Image
By Mike Montgomery I’m just going to come out and say it right off the bat.   Borderlands  doesn’t deserve the hate.  It’s not that bad, it’s honestly not.  I’m not saying it’s  good  but it’s not the steaming pile of garbage many seem to be insisting it is.  Now before you decide I’ve completely lost my mind and stop reading, I’d like to point out a few things to qualify my previous statement. First, I have no connection to the  Borderlands  franchise at all.  I’m not a gamer, and I’ve never consumed any  Borderlands  media outside of the film.  Second, bad films are my cinematic catnip.  Any time the buzz around a movie is “oh this is going to be awful,” “it’s not tracking very well,” “everyone expects this to bomb” etc etc, you’re basically telling me to go see the movie.  So essentially, if you’re one of those people who will go on and on in comment sections about how much the movie sucks and you can’t believ...

My So Called Life: Delivery Quixote

I recently upgraded to a new iPad for my photography.  Coming out of that was a pair of deliveries that were canceled for very different reasons.  One was a box to ship my old iPhone 11 to the company that Apple hires for handling trade-ins.  I arranged the trade-in the same day I ordered my new iPad, and when I picked it up in the store, the Apple Store employee completely re-worked my order to save me money and did trade-in right there.  Frankly I could probably turn that whole experience into another article, but suffice it to say everything was coming up Mikey. Second was a pair of USB-C cords I’d ordered off Amazon after realizing “Oh hey, your new device uses a cord you don’t have and the one it came with isn’t long enough.  You might want to pick up some more.”  I put my order through, and for some reason it was hit with shipping delays almost as soon as I ordered.  In fact, here, let me show you what the tracking looked like. To answer the obvi...

Step Inside My Mind (The Starting Point)

So … I used to do a fair bit of free writing.  I’d just sit in front of my computer, write my thoughts on a particular topic, and just go  until I had nothing left to say.  I pretty much got through paper writing at school that way.  I always hated research and I always hated editing.  It’s been years since I’ve been able to really sit down and just write  but when I decided to create a homepage that would let people get to know me better … I thought that would be the perfect time to start up again. There’s no real plan with this blog, no definitive format, and no publishing schedule.  The blog will take multiple forms but here’s a brief rundown: Here’s The Thing: Essentially a straight editorial, this is me responding to popular topics on social media, the news, and so on and so forth.  Those topics where I might feel like everybody’s discussing it, but there’s that one obvious thing that makes me go “Ok wait” and my brain just gets a bit stuck o...
